TOM HOPPER

GETTING SOBER, TRAINING FOR THE SCREEN & FINDING THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSCLE

[powerpress]

Luther Hargreeves in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. Billy Bones in Black Sails. Navy SEAL Raife Hastings in Prime Video’s The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.

Tom Hopper has made a career of playing special operator types. Alpha males. But behind every tough guy role, he keeps chasing the same questions: Where’s the humanity? Where’s the pain behind the eyes?

He grew up between two worlds, the rugby pitch and drama school, and has kept a foot in both ever since. Tom is a mountain of a man who is also a sensitive artist. On some level, he’s a professional athlete whose sport is acting. His return as Raife in The Terminal List: True Believer arrives October 21.

The heart of this conversation, though, is Freddie. Tom’s 11-year-old son, who is autistic and non-verbal, is in his dad’s words “the biggest light in our lives.”

Tom opens up about the moment he realized he had been trying to bring Freddie into his own world, and what shifted when he got down on the floor and joined Freddie in his. Every parent can relate. Children confront you with whatever it is inside of you that needs to grow and evolve and change. For Tom, Freddie has made him more open to every person he meets.

Here’s what we get into:

  • Lifting Weights, Van Damme & Building an Action Hero
  • Navy SEALs, the Wolf Dial & Chasing Verisimilitude
  • The Telepathy Tapes & Some Really Confronting Ideas About Consciousness
